Facebook has announced the launch of Facebook hashtags, the first in a series of measures to help users find and engage in conversations.
By grouping or categorising conversations by theme, hashtags serve to provide context to posts and signpost where they fit in the broader public discussion.
Users, including company pages, can add hashtags to posts, search by hashtag to discover content and connect with conversations within and outside of their existing networks.
Hashtags are already a popular feature on a variety of social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest.
When users click on a Facebook hashtag, they are presented with a news feed of what people from all over Facebook are saying about that particular topic.
Facebook hashtags present the savvy business with great opportunities for marketing and promotion, engagement with their customer base and the generation of conversation about their brand.
How will hashtags help your business connect with customers?
PR Daily has provided some great insights into how Facebook hashtags will be a highly useful marketing tool.
Searching Facebook will be easier
It will be much easier for users to discover content on Facebook and join conversations. This means there will be more opportunity to connect with existing and potential customers in and outside of your network.
It’ll be easier to track conversations
Facebook hashtags provide a great way to monitor and track interest in particular topics of relevance to your business. By using campaign specific hashtags, brands will be able to easily track campaign activity.
As Facebook moves towards highlighting trending topics, this will also provide an opportunity for brands to enter those conversations and reach a broad audience. It is likely that brands will eventually be able to pay for their topics to trend; another potential good opportunity to promote your business.
Conversations will expand
Businesses that currently use Twitter to create and encourage conversation, now have access to a larger, and potentially more engaged network of Facebook users. This means better reach and better engagement.
Mobile will enable conversations on the go
While mobile use of hashtags hasn’t yet been enabled, this is likely to be the next step. This gives brands an excellent opportunity to connect with their customer base while on the go, including at events or in store.
Facebook plans to roll out further changes in the coming months, which will improve how users engage in conversations and deliver better opportunities and outcomes for brands.
