We are all fear change, but it is this same fear that holds us back. Being open to change and trying new things can open the door to many exciting opportunities we would otherwise miss out on if we followed the thoughts in our head telling us not to. These experiences also give us a story to share. The TEDx talk I did on the topic highlights the importance of saying ‘yes’ and trying new things (Watch it here).
Even the most extroverted person can struggle with being the centre of attention sometimes. Being in the spotlight leaves us vulnerable to scrutiny, whilst being in the shadows makes us feel safe. The best things in life happen when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone, and you will be surprised to find that you will emerge a more confident person.
Be different in a world of similarities
We live in a world where we are encouraged to compare ourselves to others. As soon as we do this, we start living smaller lives. We start thinking our stories are not as important as theirs.
We need to have the confidence to know our stories are valid, not matter how big or small.
When you start telling your stories and sharing your expertise because it is helping the people who are listening or reading it, you will be amazed with the emotional connection that you start building with people and the relationships you start developing – because you’re positively impacting their lives.
Having the courage to be honest and exposed when you tell your stories through the media and social media will make them so much more impactful. They will start resonating with people.
So it’s about saying YES to your voice, and being brave enough to share yourself with the world.
Don’t be afraid to share your story
I believe we all have stories to tell that will help others in some way. We have experienced situations through our lives that should be shared because others will benefit from it. Or if we feel strongly enough about the issue, it’s our responsibility to express that, to effect the change we want to see.
We all have a story, so don’t be afraid to find yours. Go out, say ‘yes’ to opportunities that present themselves and find your story. You owe yourself that.
Saying ‘yes’ to new opportunities can be difficult but it is something worth doing. They are scary but the best things in life usually are. These experiences will help you grow as a person, give you a voice you didn’t know you had, and give you a valuable story to share.
