Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of networking and how building strong connections can have dramatic advantages for your professional and personal life.
I was lucky enough to attend the most recent rendition of an event called “The Gathering”. Sounds like an ancient druid meet up, but no. It’s actually a traditional basketry event that is held every two years, and allows for people like me to come and share my techniques and experiences with others. I was even lucky enough to receive a speaking opportunity at the event this time around.
What I learnt was that forming connections with like-minded people can lead to a gateway of opportunities for life and PR success.
Capitalise on social media
With one swift post on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site the potential to reach millions and connect with like-minded people has never been simpler. Utilising these platforms of instant communication open up the potential for you to use such mediums for personal and professional advantages.
When I came back from “The Gathering”, I posted a photo on Facebook showing that I was sick with laryngitis and an ear infection. A woman who I had only met a few times at business events but had connected with on Facebook offered to bring over some honey and lemon to help me feel better. This might seem abnormal to some, but it truly emphasises the interactions that social media can present you with, and it’s why you should use it to your advantage if you’re an entrepreneur or business leader.
Spark the interests of the media and maintain the relationship
Luckily it only took a few days to get my voice back, because a journalist who I’m connected to on Facebook and never chatted to before, contacted me to do a last minute interview. Which of course I said yes to, because that’s how you deepen connections with journalists.
Strengthening the bond with media contacts for interviews, public commentary and such will increase the likelihood of solidifying your brand image and public recognition.
Start building connections with like-minded people
When I attended “The Gathering” it was an absolute joy to share and learn about such a niche interest with similar-minded people. I’d already known most of the attendees from social media outlets such as Instagram and Facebook, however kindling connections in real life helped to cement our shared interests and ideas even more effectively.
It was a great privilege to continue these exciting conversations in person after years of online to-ing and fro-ing. Building a network with people that share similar interests can very likely lead to future collaborations.
Acknowledging the power of networking by implementing it through effective social media usage and strengthening real life connections can lead to an array of exciting business and personal ventures with incredible people, which will ultimately better our quality of life.
